We walked through town and heard alot of cheering and asked some guy what the race was all about, apparently they ran 150miles through the Atacama desert since Sunday! Bloody nutcases!
Today we rented our mountain bikes, 2 decent trek bikes, 1 with extremely noisy bearings...We headed out towards Death Valley or Valle de Meurta as it's known to the locals, well sure enough it wasn't that easy to find, between the map that obviously no effort was put into to the lack of signage we gave up and headed to Moon Valley or Valle de Luna, around 2 km's into our journey to Valle de Luna we asked 2 people where Valle de Meurta and we had taken the right road before and even had been at the turn, but we decided to head to the moon valley, apparently the sand here is the closest thing on earth to resemble the moon, so after cycling about 15kilometres on very hilly roads and only after eating 1 piece of bread since yesterday afternoon we were fairly beat, we turned around and cycled back the 16kms we'd already travelled into town, this would be alot easier only for the desert heat that decided to manifest itself halfway through the journey inwards. It's so hot in these parts that the sand has turned itself into glass!
On route back and first stop was a 5 litre drum of water, where we drank nearly 3 litres of it straight away! It was now time for some much deserved grub, we couldn't be arsed looking around and decided to venture into the restaurant from the first night and we weren't disappointed! After some much deserved food and drink we headed back towards the guesthouse to pick up our bags and make our way to Arica, Chile on the overnight bus.
The guesthouse owner was like a mammy, she even folded the clothes I'd slung on the floor when she was cleaning the room, a real host! She dropped us in to the bus station and everything, it's a quiet hostel but sometimes you need some piece and quiet.
So now we await a 9hour bus to Arica..and then we decide shall we stay there or head to Peru?
