Arashiyama Monkey Park Kyoto

Arashiyama Monkey Park

We went up the steep mountain, well it's not too bad but it's certainly not a walk in the park..The monkeys are 160metres up and is it a breath of fresh air from temples, the monkeys are not in any enclosure or caged in anyway, infact on the way to the top 3 of them ran in front of us. They look like a baboon or similar but they are Japanese Monkeys or Snow Monkeys depending on who you talk to, but whatever you do...DO NOT stare them in the eyes....trust me they will fight you!

We arrived at the top and the keepers have a hut where you can feed them, it's inside behind a chain linked fence...they apparently get very aggressive when fed in a group. But through the railings they were very gentle, there hands have such detail..finger nails and everything they really are our cousins!

We watched they play, fight, bang each other (see pics!) and the baby showed off on swings, etc until he couldn't see his mother anymore and legged it!

A great day out and well worth the visit, there's 140 of these on the mountain, we saw about 40 of them.
