Road to Broome

We drove the 570kms to Broome yesterday, the heat was pretty untolerable and the road just never seemed to end, but the first few hundred kms had lots of nice scenery as you can see below. Time for 1 or 2 chill out days we have done 1900kms of the journey so far.

Road to Halls Creek and Mary Pool

We drove a nice 450kms today in a convoy with our Dutch friend (the good roads help) as our van as a puny 40 litre tank we have to make stops at ripoff merchant roadhouse to refuel...it's almost like being back in Ireland. We drove to Halls Creek just a small 2 bit town, the drive itself is very scenic and really beautiful, we saw everyting from wild horses to buffalo roaming the sides of the roads. We stopped in Mary Pool and went for a quick dip in the secluded part of the lake, probably not the best idea but it was blocked off by rocks and they are ONLY freshwater crocs (I love when the aussies say this!)

Kununurra

Arrived in Kununurra finally after 350kms from Victoria crossing and first port of call was a swim we enquired in the tourist information centre if there was anywhere to swim and were told the pool was the safest bet as they'd just shot a salt water croc in the river last week! So fair enough we spent most the day in the pool with our new dutch friend, who told us off a nice spot to camp 12kms out of town. We arrived at the layby and I lit a fire and we had a few drinks and some roasted marshmallows watching the sunset. We had to surrender our bulb of Garlic at quarantine on the NT / WA border.

We hit the road, well sort off, my navigator / girlfriend took us 180kms down the wrong highway! Needless to say I was not impressed with having to done 360kms and not moved an inch. We did not for a cool down on the way (I surely needed one) in Bitter Springs...very aptly named also! We headed on towards Kununurra and done 180kms of the journey as far as Victoria River and stopped for the night at a roadside camp (before I send a Kangaroo to its maker) we met a lone dutch traveller called Irene and had a few drinks and watched her lanteron taken over by a spider!
